Uniform Sierra – R&D Flight test Engineer

Uniform Sierra Aerospace is a small US-based sUAS manufacturer. We develop and produce small uncrewed systems and components for commercial and government customers. We are recruiting students at Purdue University or the surrounding area who are looking to gain hands-on experience building small uncrewed systems.

This role requires:

  • In-person work in our manufacturing center: Purdue Technology Center, 3000 Kent Ave (other side of the highway from Walmart)
  • Access to consistent transportation to and from the office
  • Ability to travel to nearby fields for flight testing
  • A self-starting mindset

Responsibilities

  • Assist with construction of development aircraft
    • Includes but is not limited to:
      • Swapping internal components (soldering and/or plugs)
      • Redesigning 3D prints to accommodate new components
      • Firmware setup for new components
  • Assist with creating and executing flight test and evaluation plans
    • Includes but is not limited to:
      • Tuning the aircraft for targeted flight feel and characteristics
      • Running aircraft through flight testing profiles
      • Collect and evaluate flight performance data

Qualifications

  • Eligible to work in the U.S. with no restrictions
  • Experience working with or operating sUAS
  • Engineering, Science or Technical Degree Path
  • Soldering experience
  • Current FAA part 107 certificate
  • At least 50 hours of recent multirotor remote flight time
  • Attitude flight mode experience on multirotors

Preferred Skills and Qualifications

  • Junior/Senior in college
  • 200+ remote flight hours
  • Fixed wing flight experience
  • Full manual (aerobatic) multirotor experience
  • Professional UAS operating experience
  • Experience flying nonstandard UAS (high disk loading, high speed, unique motor layouts, etc.)
  • FPV flight experience
  • Experience scripting automated missions in various ground control software
  • Familiarity with:
    • Q Ground control
    • Arducopter
    • Mission Planner
    • Beta flight
    • iNav
    • BL Heli Suite
  • PID Tuning Experience
  • Love for tinkering with electronics, and building cool projects.

Uniform Sierra was founded in 2021 by two students at Purdue University to provide adaptable, affordable, U.S. built drone hardware to business and government clients. Since its founding, Uniform Sierra has served both Federal and State agencies through products like the Arrowhead – Tactical sUAS and various training and contracting projects. Going forward, the company plans to continue to improve the Arrowhead system and release a second product for our public safety customers.
