AIAA DEMAND for UNMANNED® to examine the future of UAS
The American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) will hold its second DEMAND for UNMANNED® symposium on June 6–7 at the Sheraton Denver Downtown Hotel, Denver. The symposium will be held in conjunction with the 2017 AIAA Aviation and Aeronautics Forum and Exposition (AIAA AVIATION Forum), June 5–9. DEMAND for UNMANNED® examines the technical, legal, institutional and cultural implications of unmanned aerial systems (UAS), and how they are changing the nature of civil and military aviation, driving calls for development of increasingly autonomous systems, and threatening to further crowd the skies of the already congested national airspace.
Sessions during the symposium will include: “The Evolving Culture of Aviation”; “The Verification and Validation of Intelligent Machines”; “Beyond the Robots: Toward Situated Autonomy”; “Solutions to UAS Air Traffic Management Challenges”; “Human–Machine Interaction”; and “UAS Airship Carrier Concepts: CONOPS for Long-Duration Airborne UAS Operations.” There will also be a round of “Lightning Talks” that will allow individuals and entrepreneurs to present their work in a fast-paced, interactive format.
“It’s been over a year since the Federal Aviation Administration announced that the total number of registered unmanned aircraft surpassed that of their manned counterparts, and that gap continues to increase as time moves forward,” said Mike Francis, chief, advanced programs, and senior fellow, autonomous and intelligent systems, United Technologies Research Center, and member of the DEMAND for UNMANNED® Steering Committee. “This trend is but one indicator of the potential of the powerful, new emerging capability of UAS to reshape the world in which we live. AIAA created DEMAND for UNMANNED®to provide a unique opportunity for addressing the issues these systems pose while moving toward achieving the promise of the 21st century’s most fascinating new aerospace technology. Through the exchange and interaction of their innovative ideas and unique perspectives, the developers, users, operators, entrepreneurs, students and others who participate have the unique opportunity to shape the future of UAS, while benefitting from the unique experience that is DEMAND for UNMANNED®.”
Speakers for DEMAND for UNMANNED® include: Danette Allen, senior technologist for intelligent flight control system and head of the Autonomy Incubator, NASA Langley Research Center; John Cavolowsky, program director, airspace operations and safety, NASA Headquarters; Jonathan Evans, founder, Skyward; Noah Flood, aviation and autonomy consultant, Delta Air Lines; Jesse Kallman, president, Airbus Aerial; Andrew Lacher, unmanned and autonomous systems research strategist and senior principal, The MITRE Corporation; David Mindell, founder and CEO, Humatics Corporation, and professor, Massachusetts Institute of Technology; and Alessandro Pinto, project leader, embedded intelligence, United Technologies Research Center.
DEMAND for UNMANNED® will be moderated by former NBC4 Washington technology reporter I.J. Hudson, originator of “The Digital Edge” segments on NBC4 Washington, and winner of six Washington, D.C., Emmy Awards as well as the Peter Hackes Memorial Award for career contributions to broadcast journalism in the Washington, D.C., area.
