An active community is growing fast modifying the Parrot ARdrone here Most exciting development Linux based navigation. We have picked up a couple of interesting posts, Android is still not supported. Several people have had motors die and there is at least one fly away reported.

The next logical step for hackers has to be bespoke frames. But once you get to that point you will probably looking hard at all the other opensource multicopter platforms out there.
